Of Marriage
I used to want to get married. Well…let me rephrase that…I still intend to get married, but not to -get- married.
See, I have a problem with societies rules of thumb when it comes to the sanctity of marriage, beyond the gay rights and civil unions debate. I have a problem with the entire thought process of what modern day marriages are supposed to be.
Take into consideration the typical American wedding. The engagement ring that is supposed to make up 2 months of the guys paycheck. The expensive white gown and rented tuxes. The thousands of dollars on caterers, flowers, DJ’s and folded pieces of paper with pretty scripting. Not to mention the perfectly towering cake that doesn’t even taste that great, yet costs more than my first car.
Rings in general are an old custom, but the hella expensive diamond ring, I’ve always been under the impression wasn’t instituted until much more recently. Also, Tiffany’s suggests a 3 months salary spent on an engagement ring. I think if my fiance spent my rent money for the next 6 months on an engagement ring, I’d have to beat his ass.
Perhaps I grew up too poor to care. I just don’t see the point in spending that much money on a cookie-cutter ceremony. I’d rather have something simple, comfortable, and fun. Something that displayed who I am, my heritage and culture, as well as my husbands, and the union of those two cultures together.
I’m also not very fond of the whole “waiting to have sex till after marriage” thing. That could be the sexually-hyper 25 year old in me, but I also see no point to it. I’m not advocating promiscuity, more like promoting open sexuality with someone you deem special enough to share it with. What happens if I don’t intend to get married for another 4 years, am I expected to remain celibate the entire time?

I’m glad someone else out there agrees with me on this issue. I was always looked at very oddly when I speak my mind about this — pretty much the same values you just posted here. Heh.
