Muse

June 6th 2006

Myspace is the new arch-nemesis of web design. Where I thought tacky and blinding designs were finally lessening, myspace has brought them back with a vengeance.

Curse you my space! *shakes fist*

Check out this Diet Coke with Mentos experiment. Over 100 bottles of coke and over 500 mentos. Insanity.

Today has been a shitty day all around

June 5th 2006

My work wants me to learn javaScript. Not so bad, I really want to learn all I can about various languages. The problem is they want me to learn it -now-. I was given a small snippet of code to look over and I’m going to be quizzed on it tomorrow.

I know jack about javaScript. I can stare at this snippet for 3 hours and not learn a damn thing. It’s just not how I learn things. I learn through trial and error, through playing, and definitely at my own pace.

So this will royally suck. And though I’d prefer not to have homework for my job, I’m doing a bit of studying at home and putting off all of my personal projects. Which means I’m just getting more and more backed up…..great.

Regardless, I’m determined. I can’t afford to lose my job if they decide I’m not useful anymore. Not at all.

My dads surgery cost $12,000. We have to pay about $1,000 of that with Medicare taking care of the rest, which isn’t bad considering, but it’s still money I just don’t have. I figure $600 to get my broncos and my dads F-150 ready for emissions. More money spent before I even make it.

My father went to the doctors today, they did more bloodwork and found out his red-bloodcell count is a little low. Not what I wanted to hear. They aren’t sure if it’s because of the surgery or what. I’ve been fighting back tears since I’ve been home and found out. It never does me any good to cry anyway, it just makes me more upset.

They want him to start the South Beach diet. So he’s reading a book on that now. I’m going to do it with him to help encourage him, since it’s hard to stick to a particular diet. I know I said I’m not a strong supporter of diets, but I’d fucking eat just lettuce everyday for the rest of my life if it’d help my father.

Gas

June 3rd 2006

April - June 2005:
Drove 1978 Fullsize Ford Bronco with a 351M engine, auto transmission, and 35″ BFG All-Terrains
Gas Mileage: $250-$300

April - June 2006:

And that’s with rising gas prices since Katrina in August 2005. Not to mention cost of random cost of replacement parts for the bronco.

Gangs in Maryland

June 3rd 2006

There was an article in the Carroll County Times today about gang activity in Carroll County. Now, this is a small farming county. Granted over the last 10 years or so, cityfolk have been moving up here to be a part of that small farming county, but it still doesn’t seem as developed as one would think, especially not for gang activity.

However, apparently we have local gangs like MS-13 (no clue what that stands for), the Bloods, and the Black Gorilla Family.

We’ve always had Hells Angels and Pagans around here, my neighbor had Hells Angels up here about 3 years ago but they were chased off by cops.

There is also an ultra-violent Asian gang in Baltimore called the “Tiny Rascals” (I almost had to chuckle at that one). I’ve never heard of them before, then again I try to stay out of the city.

In the last 10 years, we’ve had I believe 3 murders that I can remember here in Westminster. It’s not a very violent county as far as murders. There are a lot of fights, I remember quite a few organized ones in particular in highschool. But other than that, it was pretty peaceful. I suppose by the time I have the money to move, I’ll be moving out further west, perhaps Washington County or Frederick County, to kinda get further away from the city.

I don’t really understand why people feel the need to start gangs. Maybe guys have a need for brotherhood, hence the use of fraternities in college. I’d say the same for women, due to the sororities out there, but I tend to think women are less capable of sisterhood due to our jealous tendancies and ability to really hate each other. But none of that justifies the desire for violence and bullying.

Gun Control (literally)

June 1st 2006

So while target practicing this weekend, I noticed that I am much more comfortable with a long gun than I am a hand gun. Perhaps it’s the ability to hold it more steady.

I’m still a decent shot with both. My father and his brothers used to practice a lot when they were younger. As kids all the cousins (including myself) were given BB guns and we’d practice constantly. And though my fathers eyes are failing, he can still tell I’m a better shot than he is now.

Now archery I haven’t had the ability to practice yet. But perhaps this summer will bring me the money to get myself a decent bow.
