I had a conversation with a co-worker yesterday about his children, especially his son, who had really bad chapped lips. He looks like a clown because he has this huge red mark around his entire mouth. My sister actually had this same issue a few years back, and still would except that we keep her well supplied with lip balm. Her being in her “I’m 13 now so I’m officially a teenager” stage and liking all things “make-up” helps.
He said that he used to use petroleum jelly on his son, but that his son hates it. I mentioned to him that petroleum jelly does not actually moisturize, and can actually be harmful since obviously it’s made out of petroleum. That and it is more of a cover-up to prevent moisture from escaping. I personally don’t want to put anything that is also used as fuel, on my skin.
I had a friend that used to make a petroleum based mixture as a generic salve, and it never did anything for me. Now that I read up on organic ingredients a lot more now, I realize how bad the salve really was for you.
So I recommended he use beeswax. He wasn’t sure where he would find such, so I did a google search and ran across Etsy.com. It’s a site that lets people sell their DIY (do-it-yourself) and artistic items to the public.
It’s not an auction site, just a purchasing site for artists. They sell everything from bath and body products to handmade journals, baked goods, sewn goods (Renee!) and even furniture.
What I found there was perfect. Something a child would love, and also help their chapped lips issue. Organic Chocolate Lip Balm, made from:
extra virgin sweet almond oil
unrefined cocoa butter
unrefined beeswax
french honey
dutch pure cocoa powder
Sounds absolutely delicious. And the cost? $1.50 each, with only $1.00 shipping. Unfortunately they only had 2 left, so I got both (one for me, and one as a gift to my co-worker). But I’m hoping the artist Alchemille (who happens to be pagan) will be making some more very soon.

My daughter has the same problem with her lips. I buy every sort of chapstick I can find, but I have to be careful not to get menthol or any thing minty that might sting. This is good to know. I might be able to find another beeswax product out there. It is too bad there were so few chocolate ones, that sounds just yummy!

I also bought Chicken Poop lip balm, which I enjoy a lot. It has no mint, but it does have citrus in it, so I’m not sure if that’ll help. It’s also organic and made of beeswax
