Celebrating Earth Day: What can you do?

March 13th 2007

Earth Day I remember in 1990, I was around 10, our school pictures had the option of an “earth day” background, which I of course chose. It was a big deal in my school, but I don’t think I totally understood what it meant back then.

This years International Earth Day is on March 20th at 8:07pm on the equinox, but the official holiday is always April 22nd. I think it’s important for everyone to at least try and do one simple thing in honor of this 37 year holiday.

A 9 year old girl, in 2001, was so passionate about the environment, that she’s starting up her own organization called “Pump ‘Em Up“. She learned that there were plans to drill the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, but that Americans could save as much oil as they would get from the Refuge, if they would just pump their tires to their proper inflation levels. We are wasting at least 4 million gallons of fuel a day by not keeping them at the correct level.

To make this even more simple for you, companies like Sears, Firestone, Goodyear, and the Rubber Manufactures Association are donating tire gauges around the country for her organization to give away for free. With your tires inflated properly, you’ll extend the life of your tires by about 25% and save you hundreds in the cost of gas.

Now how can you refuse?
