Second Showing of the House

August 9th 2008

Dad and I went for a second showing of the old farmhouse we had looked at last month. I looked at it in more detail this time, and I still think it’d be a good investment for us. It does need a lot of work, but we can do that work over time and get a really good return on our investment. The amount of spackle, primer, and paint alone is going to be a decent amount.

The basement is a bit of an issue. It needs new stairs as these are partially pieces of loose wood on bricks (wtf?), but we can put some concrete stairs down to the basement, which is half dirt by the looks of it. We’ll probably have to put up some block down there eventually.

I took a look at the old hand well too. I don’t see a pump for it, so I can only imagine they took that out. I’m no even sure where I’d -find- one of those, but I definitely want one. Looking down into the well felt like I was looking into that damn well from “The Ring.” Spooky.

The seller’s disclosure, which is required for the state of PA, said that there was ground leakage, I’m assuming into the basement. But when dad and I were looking at the rain spouts, they all went into the ground. We couldn’t find any drainage anywhere else so we can only assume they go -directly- into the ground by the foundation of the house. How stupid is that. It’s an easy fix though, since we put all that piping around our old house, we can easily do the same here. (kinda wish we would have taken the piping with us though).

The realtor that showed it to us is my uncle’s cousin. He’s going to get with us on a list of houses Monday, if he can find any. And then we’ll decide whether we want to put a bid on this house. I kinda do, but I can’t get any reading from my dad whether or not he wants to put a bid on it or not.

So we’ll decide next week, and then I have to deal with the FHA financing. Should be interesting.
